Tangled Tides: War of the Underwater Worlds

Today is a very special day, and, no, I'm not referring to all the sales taking place for the time honored tradition that is Black Friday. No, I'm talking about the release of a very good book by a very awesome person: Karen Amanda Hooper's Tangled Tides. (In case you weren't here on Monday, you can read my review here.)

The cool thing about Tangled Tides is that it's not just about merfolk; it's about a number of mythical creatures, all fighting for survival. In celebration of her book's release, Karen is hosting a battle of sorts, a war of the underwater worlds that takes place all over the internet. Myself and other readers are choosing our sides and declaring them publicly, and if you want a chance to win a signed copy of her book (and why wouldn't you? I do!), you should choose a side, too. All you have to do is tweet about your favorite creature/who you're rooting for and include the hashtag #TangledTides to be entered to win a signed copy of the book as well as some other sea creature gifts. While merfolk and selkies are the primary creatures, gorgons and sirens also play critical roles in the story. In order for you to make a more informed decision, Karen has posted brief descriptions of each creature on her blog. (If you've read this far, you've probably realized you have to go to Karen's blog at some point. It is her book after all. :)

Although I find them all fascinating and rooted for everyone while reading Tangled Tides, I have to admit that when it comes down to it, I choose merfolk. Why? you ask. Because they're cool . . . and they have Treygan.

Merfolk are all about the sunshine and the water. They have different jobs, and they even come color coded. AND merfolk aren't condemned to an eternity underwater, they can move freely between land and sea (if they know how to control it), and they can manipulate water. They're pretty awesome, if I may so.

All interior artwork was done by fellow writer/blogger Alexandra Shostak, who is also awesome and incredibly talented. In the book, merfolk are represented by the image at the right, which I absolutely adore.

Contest Alert!

I have been meaning to post. Really, I have. Between playing catch up since SCBWI New York and school and the massive amounts of snow that keep dropping on us, I just haven't managed to make it (or anything else for that matter) work. So I'm coming to you now with something good to get back in your good graces: a contest.

CONTEST

So, I have a lovely signed copy of this pretty book here:

ANYWAY, if you live in the US or Canada (I'm cheap right now, sorry everyone!) then you're eligible for this. I'm not going to get all kinds of fancy and give you the chance to have 20 billion entries, so you get one entry per person.

Interning, Links, and a Shout Out

Alright, so I've been super busy and all kinds of scatterbrained, but this interning thing is amazing. I read slush. Lots of slush, and let me tell you that I tend to just nod my head at all the posts on blogs about reading queries and queries in general now. Man, that was a lot of links. :)

There are a lot, A LOT of really bad ones, so when you see that an agent has only requested 1 partial out of over 100 queries remember that most of the stuff they read was horrid. You can officially take my word on that, and I want to request more than Awesome Agent.

I've also noticed that what people say about the intern or the new agent reading slush is true; though, naturally, I can't find any of those posts right now. We're more willing to look at something than an agent might be. I'm sure Awesome Agent has requested way more since taking me on than she usually does, just to prove a point. And it's working. Already I look back at some of the first things I requested and wonder what I saw, and it comes down to them being the best ones of the batch, regardless of whether they were good or not.

But I have seen some good stuff, not a whole lot, but some. And that is awesome. You know what else is awesome? Getting an email that says something I picked out of the slush has agent interest/offers elsewhere. Why is that cool? Because it means that something I saw in the slush got a real agent's attention. Makes me feel like I'm doing something right.

In other news, the lovely Candyland is hosting a contest over on her blog. It's for a good cause, like how the entire writing community pulled together for Do the Write Thing for Nashville. Candyland is using her blog to support the Joy 2 the World non-profit organization. In Candyland's words:

Friday Fun

Alright you guys, I have officially passed the 100 followers mark. You all are awesome! :) This means that there will definitely be a contest. As I said before though, it will have to wait until my funds have been replenished, meaning August at the earliest.

There will be awesome prizes, though I suppose that really depends on your definition of awesome. I doubt I'll be able to get my hands on a super awesome critique by some super agent or author, but we'll see when we get closer. There may be books, there may be gift cards, or even a movie. And I can tell you now, you'll have to do more than just enter your name into a metaphorical hat. :) But don't worry, it won't be anything too hard! Hehe.

Also, on a totally unrelated side note, I am so poor that I had to make my own bookshelves:

Why yes, those are copier paper boxes. And, so far, they're working beautifully. :)
