Description:
What if you had everything:
A gorgeous boyfriend who was madly in love with you?
Quirky hip parents who totally got you?
A musical talent that could take you anywhere?
What if your biggest problem in life was choosing which path to take?
Follow your first love--music-- to New York City?
Or stay with your boyfriend, friends, and family?
What if one day, you went out for a drive...
And in an instant everything changed?
What if suddenly all the other choices were gone?
Except for one--the only one that truly mattered?
What would you do?
A sophisticated, layered, and heart achingly beautiful story about the power of family and friends, the choices we all make—and the ultimate choice Mia commands.
Mini-Review: If I Stay is a gorgeous, powerful book that breaks your heart again and again and leaves you wondering what to do with all the pieces.
My Thoughts:
Everyone raves about how good this book is, and for good reason.
Mia's day starts out like any other, until a horrible car accident shatters her family and tries to claim Mia's life. Forced to watch events play out before her, Mia must make a choice: move on and join her family on the other side, or stay and live a life without them.
Gayle Forman has created a wonderful book that moves gracefully between Mia's present and her memories as she reflects on her life and tries to decide what to do with it. I expected this to be a good read; I didn't expect it to make me cry.
Music is a big part of If I Stay, and, as a cellist, I tend to be a little picky about music books. But the technique isn't what's important here, the emotional impact is. And, boy, is it emotional. It's a book about love, loss, friendship, and the choices that define us, and it's good.
If you watch Grey's Anatomy and you loved the musical episode, you will love Gayle Forman's If I Stay. Then again, if you like books at all, you'll probably like this one.
